The Philadelphia Eagles signed quarterback Joe Milton III from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad to their active 53-man roster on October 16, after sidelining franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts ahead of their Week 6 game against the Carolina Panthers due to a medical issue with a blood clot in his leg.

The team announced on October 15 that Hurts would be unavailable for the upcoming matchup. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the signing, stating, “Breaking: The #Eagles are signing QB Joe Milton off the #Cowboys practice squad and to their 53-man roster, per sources.” Under NFL rules, because Milton was signed from an opponent’s practice squad, he must stay on the Eagles’ active 53-man roster for at least three weeks.

Hurts had been diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his leg. He received clearance to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5, but a Wednesday night ultrasound showed movement in the small blood clot, according to the Eagles’ official statement. As a result, Hurts is out indefinitely.

Tanner McKee will start at quarterback for the Eagles in Hurts’ absence. Milton will serve as the backup signal caller during this period.

The move strengthens the Eagles’ quarterback depth while their starter recovers, ensuring the team has options for the Carolina Panthers game and beyond as the situation develops.
