Nigerian troops during a security operation recovering weapons and aiding rescued civilians

Nigerian troops rescued more than 70 abducted people and recovered N10 million in suspected ransom during security operations across the country from October 15 to 22, the Defence Headquarters said. The operations also led to the arrest of suspected terrorists, kidnappers and arms dealers, along with the recovery of weapons and ammunition in several states.

Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, detailed the results in a statement on Saturday. In Katsina State, troops freed 27 villagers taken from Gamji community. In Niger State, they rescued 29 residents who fled into bushes during an attack in Mariga Local Government Area. In Kogi State, soldiers freed 11 passengers after attackers struck a commercial bus on the Ayere-Kabba road.

Troops tracked kidnappers to Falgore Forest, neutralised two suspects and rescued a victim taken from Fanyabo village in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State. They recovered the N10 million believed paid as ransom by the victim’s family and returned both the money and the rescued person. In Mokwa, Niger State, troops arrested a wanted suspected terrorist leader and an accomplice, seizing four mobile phones and cash.

In the North-East, Operation Hadin Kai troops arrested suspected logistics suppliers in Borno and Yobe states, including some linked to clothing for terrorist uniforms. Nineteen terrorist fighters and their family members surrendered or were intercepted in Bama, Konduga, Mafa and Gwoza local government areas of Borno. Some cited hunger, hardship and clashes between rival groups as reasons for leaving their camps. Troops also recovered weapons after an attack on a military position in Mairari, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno.

Further operations rescued more victims and led to arrests of suspected arms dealers and kidnappers in states including Taraba, Benue, Plateau, Imo, Anambra and Edo. Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Olufemi Oluyede praised the troops and other security agencies. He urged personnel to stay disciplined and respect human rights, and called on communities to report threats promptly. Onoja said the Armed Forces would continue operations until peace and security return nationwide.
