The Nifty 50 tracks the float-weighted average of 50 of the largest companies listed on the National Stock Exchange. It is owned and managed by NSE Indices, a wholly owned subsidiary of the exchange. Launched on 22 April 1996 with a base date of 3 November 1995 and a base value of 1,000, the index serves as the main benchmark for India’s equity market and covers companies from 13 sectors of the economy.

Investors and fund managers commonly use the Nifty 50 to gauge overall large-cap performance and broader market direction. Related products include index funds along with futures and options contracts traded on the National Stock Exchange and its international arm. The day’s modest rise reflected steady activity among the index’s major constituents amid normal market conditions.
