Delhi Police on Monday issued a circular de-notifying Jantar Mantar as a designated venue for protests and demonstrations. The decision follows recommendations from a committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to identify alternative proper sites that uphold citizens’ right to organise such gatherings. Three new venues have been allocated in its place: Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground.

The circular stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs had set up the committee to examine suitable alternatives to the existing designated site. Acting on its recommendations, authorities removed Jantar Mantar from the list of approved locations for protests. A detailed and revised standard operating procedure for holding demonstrations at the three newly designated venues will be issued separately.

Jantar Mantar had served as a major hub for youth-led protests since June this year. These demonstrations were organised by the Cockroach Janta Party, founded by Abhijeet Dipke, and ultimately led to the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged exam irregularities. Security personnel were recently seen near the site amid ongoing protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The change shifts the permitted locations for public demonstrations away from the central Jantar Mantar area. Protesters and organisers will now need to use the newly listed grounds once the updated procedures are released. The move aims to provide designated spaces while addressing concerns related to the previous site.
