Captain Shubman Gill scored a rapid century off just 62 balls to continue his strong form in one-day internationals, helping India begin their pursuit of a massive 406-run target set by the West Indies in the second ODI at Guwahati on Wednesday.

Gill reached his 11th ODI hundred and second in successive matches by clipping Alzarri Joseph through the leg side for four. He removed his helmet, raised his bat and shared a brief embrace with opening partner Rohit Sharma. The celebration stayed muted as India still faced a long road in the record chase after the visitors posted their highest-ever ODI total of 405 for seven.

The century marked Gill’s third consecutive hundred in ODIs played in India. Only AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli have recorded four successive centuries on home soil in the format. His 62-ball effort also became the fastest century by an Indian captain in ODIs, surpassing the previous mark held by Rohit Sharma. Gill struck 10 fours and five sixes in the innings and formed a strong opening stand with Rohit that crossed 200 runs.

West Indies had earlier produced a dominant batting display on a flat Guwahati surface. John Campbell scored 101 off 68 balls, Shai Hope made 104 off 94, and Amir Jangoo remained unbeaten on 114 off 69 deliveries. It was the first time three West Indies batters scored centuries in the same ODI innings. India’s inexperienced pace attack struggled without Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, while Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets to complete 200 ODI scalps.

Gill’s knock kept India ahead of the required rate early in the chase and offered hope of a successful pursuit. The result of the match remained open as the hosts pressed on after the landmark partnership.
