BYD has released the Shark 6 Performance, a plug-in hybrid double-cab ute for the New Zealand market that upgrades the original model with a larger 2.0-litre petrol engine, 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity and expanded off-road modes. The vehicle, priced at $78,990, builds on the first Shark 6 by addressing its limited towing ability and off-road options while keeping the same overall design and electric-style driving experience.
The Performance model keeps the distinctive square-jawed exterior of the earlier Shark 6, with no major styling changes. At 5457mm long and weighing 2775kg, it sits between conventional one-tonne utes and larger American-style pickups. Differences are mainly mechanical. The plug-in hybrid system now uses a 2.0-litre engine instead of the previous 1.5-litre unit, paired with a 29.6kWh battery. Combined power reaches 350kW and 700Nm of torque. Official fuel use is listed at 1.3 litres per 100km under WLTP testing with a partial charge.
Inside, the cabin remains spacious and well finished, with a 15.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control and heated and ventilated front seats. The main update is a column-mounted gear selector that replaces the earlier centre-console lever, freeing space between the seats. The steering wheel is noted as thicker and less premium in feel than the rest of the interior.
On the road the larger engine allows the hybrid system to generate electricity more smoothly under load. Electric motors still provide the main drive, delivering quick response and quiet running. New terrain settings expand off-road ability. The rise to 3.5-tonne towing capacity brings the ute in line with common buyer expectations, though payload and gross vehicle mass limits still apply.
BYD supplies a six-year/150,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000km battery warranty and eight years of roadside assistance. Service intervals are set at 12 months or 20,000km. The Shark 6 Performance retains the five-star ANCAP rating and aims to offer a more complete package for buyers who need both everyday practicality and greater towing or off-road capability.
