Volvo, NVIDIA Expand Pact for Safer Automated Driving

Volvo Cars announced on October 15, 2026, that it is expanding its partnership with NVIDIA to advance safety in automated driving technology for future Volvo vehicles. The move builds on the companies’ decade-long collaboration that started in 2017 and aims to help cars navigate complex real-world settings from door to door.

The technology relies on Volvo Cars’ safety expertise combined with NVIDIA’s Hyperion sensor and compute architecture. It will allow future Volvo cars to handle highways, busy urban streets, and parking scenarios safely. The system is set to appear first in a next-generation Volvo model that forms part of the company’s largest-ever product push.

Volvo Cars plans to integrate its vehicle safety systems and engineering know-how with NVIDIA’s artificial intelligence and accelerated computing tools. These include the Hyperion architecture, Halos operating system, and Alpamayo Stack driving software. The partners intend to improve AI-supported car safety and gradually introduce eyes-off and mind-off driving features so that travel feels easier for customers.

Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars, said: “Volvo has been synonymous with car safety for almost 100 years. By working with NVIDIA, we bring together two distinct strengths: industry-leading safety knowledge and world-class AI technology. That combination gives us a unique opportunity to create safer and more attractive cars for our customers.”

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, said: “Accelerated computing has transformed the car into an intelligent machine that can understand the world around it. Volvo has spent nearly a century protecting people on the road. Together, we’re combining Volvo’s extraordinary vehicle safety systems with NVIDIA Hyperion and Halos to build a new generation of cars that make driving safer and more effortless.”

The expanded partnership marks a further step in the long collaboration. Volvo Cars is incorporating advanced computing into its next generation of electric cars, positioning the company as a leader in software-defined vehicles. The effort draws on nearly a century of Volvo’s real-world safety research and seeks a new standard for automated driving that is safe, convenient, and trusted by customers.
